Lords of the Rings - Dispelling the myths from Titanic’s Dock
Lords of the Rings - Dispelling the myths at Titanic’s Dock - The world’s most advanced science demystified from Titanic’s Dock.
Excellent understanding of the World’s largest Scientific Experiment was provided in one of Northern Ireland’s most leading edge Education projects ever to be undertaken – from Titanic’s Dock at the Northern Ireland Science Park. The project was successfully ‘docked and delivered’ with a precision that reflected positively the science and engineering associated with Titanic’s Dock, which at it’s time, nearly 100 years ago, was the largest dock in the world and capable of hosting the largest man made object of its time (Titanic), whilst being capable of empyting a staggering 23 million gallons of water in under 2 hours!
Steve Myers, Director of Accelerators and Technology at CERN and James Stirling, a Theoretical Particle Physicist of Cambridge University provided students present and ‘virtually’ present, with an incredible insight into the goings on at CERN’s site. The purpose built 27 kilometre tunnel some 100 meters under the ground on the Franco-Swiss border is where particles are being smashed together by the world’s highest energy particle accelerator achieving 1.18 TeV per beam (not too shabby!).
The project was brought to life by Northern Ireland Science Park’s Chief Executive Dr Norman Apsley and expertly piloted by broadcaster and Titanic enthusiast Susie Millar, who’s great Grandfather Tommy Millar, had been a key member of Titanic’s guarantee group. The session was closed with a word from the Education Minister, Caitriona Ruane, who noted the importance of the ‘fire or chisba’ to be ignited for learning in the sciences.
