Can we avoid A Titanic Ocean Catastrophe? World Ocean Day - June 08th 2010

May 27 2010

As we approach World Ocean’s day 2010 I thought it prudent to share this recent TED Talk from Jeremy Jackson ‘How we Wrecked the Ocean’ (See link below).  Chilling stuff and without action a very bleak outlook for humanity in the next 20 - 50 years.  Given the obvious reliance of everyone on this most precious ecology, I wondered what technologies around today’s Titanic Dock at NI Science Park, would have the skills and ‘ware with all’ to help us reduce pollution, increase sustainable practices, develop renewable resources of energy and other ‘life giving’ sustenance?

Examples for discussion include Installation of The world’s first commercial tidal current power system, built by Harland & Wolff on behalf of Marine Current Turbines. Called the ‘SeaGen commercial tidal energy system’, it commenced operation the week of August 20th 2007 in Northern Ireland’s Strangford Lough.  Is this the way forward for harvesting our ocean and refocusing our labour pool based along the worlds’s coastline as a best, worst case scenario? What else is out there? If you know of any, please feel free to post a comment to this blog at titanicdock.com.  Action Renewables.org are based at the Science Park and provide some other ecologically minded ways to generate energy and has links to community organisations who can provide support and assistance.  Please support World Oceans Day 2010 by getting involved in an event near you!
