May 27 2010As we approach World Ocean’s day 2010 I thought it prudent to share this recent TED Talk from Jeremy Jackson ‘How we Wrecked the Ocean’ (See link below). Chilling stuff and without action a very bleak outlook for humanity in the next 20 - 50 years. Given the obvious reliance of everyone on this most precious ecology, I wondered what technologies around today’s Titanic Dock at NI Science Park, would have the skills and ‘ware with all’ to help us reduce pollution, increase sustainable practices, develop renewable resources of energy and other ‘life giving’ sustenance?

May 06 2010May 21st - 23rd sees the Titanic International Society put on an event who’s line up includes Belfast Society’s most eloquent lady Chairman, Una Reilly. I noted on one of the pages an interesting point being made which was not lost on me. Someone commented “Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t the Titanic centennial supposed to be in 2012?” Thankfully an answer was swift and resolute saying “The 100th anniversary of the disaster is 2012, yes. 2010-11 is the 100th anniversary celebration of the building of the ship which is the thing to be celebrating. The sinking was a tragedy which will be commemorated in 2012. I hope we can all celebrate the achievements of Belfast’s most industrious age sooner rather than later..

April 14 2010At this time of year as we mark the anniversary of the loss of RMS Titanic, my thoughts turn to my great grandfather who was sailing on Titanic as part of the crew to start a new life in America. Obviously I never knew the man or his son who was orphaned at the age of 5 by the Titanic disaster, but I still find the ceremony at Belfast’s Titanic Memorial intensely moving. It was a pivotal moment in my family’s history.
